Patience is a Virtue

Hey everyone, welcome to another edition of Homeroom Announcements, my Friday podcast type video where I give thoughts and updates about the Skooled Zone channel.

Sometimes on the Homeroom Announcements, I'm going to share my thoughts and feelings about being a YouTuber. Not only to let you know where I'm at from a channel development standpoint, but also so other YouTubers in the future can look back on these videos and hopefully learn a thing or two, you know, vicariously from my experiences. Maybe help them along as they might start up their own channels. Someday, maybe in a year or two from now, I might put out a book of cautionary tales because I'm definitely learning a lot about this amazing medium through trial and error.

So one of the hardest things in life to exhibit is perseverance. Perseverance basically means patience and persistence through challenging times. There's always that period once you hit your stride but before you see any real gains. I'm wise enough to know this isn't just a YouTube thing. It happens in many other facets of life.

First you have to have the knowledge about the endeavor, and then you have to develop a consistent routine. But once you have the knowledge and a routine, gains don't always come immediately. For example, if you've ever embarked on a workout routine, first you have to know what exercises to do, then you have to get in the habit of doing them.

But once you have those aspects down, you're not going to reach your lifting or running goals or your ideal weight immediately. It takes patience. As the saying goes, “Patience is a virtue.” And of course, as usual on the Skooled Zone, we'll look into the origin of that phrase.

So it came from an allegorical poem called “The Vision of Piers Plowman” written in the middle ages by William Langland. Scholars rank it right up there with Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales." It follows the title character's religious quest to better himself.

The author probably got the notion of patience is a virtue from the fact Patience is one of the Seven Heavenly Virtues, along with Kindness, Charity, etc. The Seven Heavenly Virtues didn't actually come from the Bible, but instead from a book called Psychomachia by the Latin poet Prudentius.

Anyway, many religions describe very similar themes of virtue and most of them have something similar to patience. The Islamic poet Saadi said, “Have patience. All things are difficult before they become easy.” The Buddha said, “Patience is an invulnerable armor.” The Tao Te Ching speaks of patience as one of your greatest treasures.

Interestingly enough, the antithesis of patience within the Seven Deadly Sins is Wrath. Who hasn't felt anger and frustration when something is taking too long to come to fruition? But just as with your gains in the gym or your progress through school or your rise on YouTube, if you're a YouTuber, it all takes patience.

I know it'll be a while before I hit my stride on YouTube, and I'm okay with that. I'm just enjoying myself right now, making really fun videos and seeing what people respond to. That's the way you should approach most endeavors in life. You gotta go into it because you love it. Some jobs I guess you do gotta go into because of the money. I mean, I doubt anyone would want to be a proctologist if they weren't getting paid. But you know what I mean.

Have patience, persistence, and perseverance in all things. But if that's a tall order, then at least have patience where it counts, like reaching a lofty goal. Did you know that Kung Fu doesn't really mean martial arts. That word is WuShu. No, "Kung Fu" actually means achievement through persistence, or more simply “skill through effort.” So... to have YouTube Kung Fu, you must hone your skills through consistency, dedication, and effort. And there ya go grasshopper.
