Homeroom Announcements 111

The Minecraft Sob Story

Hey everyone, welcome to another edition of Homeroom Announcements, my Friday podcast type video where I give thoughts and updates about the Skooled Zone channel.

Besides channel updates, I also sometimes talk about current events in the gamersphere. Last Friday, for example, I talked about National Video Games Day. If you haven't checked that video out, I'll leave a link in the description or in the icard above.

Today, I'm going to talk about a topic that caught my attention in the news as it related to business side of video games. Or in this case, perhaps a peek into the downside of success.

Markus Persson is the founder of the phenomenally popular mega-sandbox video game Minecraft. Almost exactly a year ago, the developing company Mojang sold Minecraft to Microsoft for an ungodly amount of money. I guess it took a while for Markus to feel the impact, but a couple weeks ago he tweeted his angst about the psychological implications of his newfound wealth.

As you can see, some of his tweets are baffling and something I wanted to delve into for today's Homeroom Announcements. To help explore this further, I collaborated with a fellow YouTuber who is much more of an expert at Minecraft than me. His channel is called TheNeeebs and you should definitely check him out. Link is in the description or in the top right icon. We had a really interesting conversation about the topic. Here's how it went...

We continued to talk about various aspects of entertainment properties growing big and selling out and then eventually got back around to Notch. We wanted to leave it on a positive note.

So the saying goes, money can't buy happiness. Real life examples like this make the moral of such fairy tale stories ring true, especially when it hits close to home for us players in the world of video games. Now since his public venting, things for Notch have presumably calmed down. I sincerely wish the best for him. Innovators like him always inspire me. So I hope he continues to pioneer and use his creative talents to inspire others.

Hope you enjoyed today's Homeroom Announcements. It was actually a beta-test for that Sunday Skooled interview show I mentioned in Homeroom Announcements 101. Hopefully I'll be able to get that rolling in the new year. In the meantime, plenty more awesome sauce on the menu at the Skooled Zone. In fact, that was a little hint about a bonus video I'm putting out next week. Look out for that while I gear up for the next gaming series. And on that note, thank for watching and have a good weekend.
