You Can Call Vault-Tec from Fallout 4!

Hey guys, welcome to another Xtra Kredit episode on the Skooled Zone, my Saturday snippet series of gaming glitches, Easter eggs, hidden loot and extra special factoids from my regular gaming series. This episode is going to feature my first Easter egg in Fallout 4. At least I think it would be considered an Easter egg. It was to me. Pretty hilarious actually.

So in Episode 2, I made it out of the vault and to my old house here in Sanctuary and in Episode 3 scheduled for Monday we'll meet back up with Codsworth, then meet up with Dogmeat and make our way to Concord and all that fun stuff.

But before I even left the house here, I peeked around a bit more and noticed something interesting. On this calendar here hung on the right side the fridge, there's actually a phone number for Vault-Tec. Most people would blow that off, thinking it was just decoration and all. But I decided what the hell. I'm going to call it and record the conversation.

As most people would assume, you can convert the letters in the word Vault-Tec to numbers using an alpha-numerical keypad. But just in case your phone doesn't show the conversions or you're just lazy and don't want to look it up, have no fear, the number is right here...

1-888-4-VAULTTEC = 1-888-4-82858832

If you're outside the US, you'll have to look up how you would call toll-free numbers from abroad. Or maybe toll-free numbers are universal, not sure on that one. But here in the US, you need the toll-free code, where an area code normally goes, which in this case is 888. Then the you need the prefix, which in this case is 482. And you only need four numbers after that, which in this case is 8588. You can drop off the last 3-2. It may even mess up your call if you add those on in some cases. So all you really need to call is 1-888-482-8588.

Anyway, it takes you to a pretty funny recording that goes like this. Oh and turn on your subtitles, if you have any trouble understanding the robot voice. I transcribed it for you like a boss. Okay, here goes… [ phone rings ]

"Thank you for calling Vault-Tec. Your first choice in post-nuclear survival. We're sorry, but due to unexpectedly high call volume, all representatives are currently busy. Please, stay on the line and someone will be with you as soon as possible. There are... One-hundred and one million... Callers in front of you. Estimated wait time... Seventy-eight thousand, six hundred forty three hours... Thank you for calling... VAULT-TEC! Have a wonderful day.

The call ends after around 30 seconds and it's the same recording if you call back. No need to spam it for something different. But I gotta say, it was a pretty quirky discovery. I'm sure I'm not the first person out there to figure this out, but I thought it was worth recording it for you guys and letting you hear it anyway.

Props to Bethesda for these little details. I know I showered praise on gaming companies in yesterday's Homeroom Announcements, but it's things like this that keep the gaming community intrigued and engaged. Well played. The recording that is. Ahem... Okay, that's my time. I'll be here all week. Tips in the hat are always appreciated!!

And we'll see you next time on the Skooled Zone.
